There are two things that remind us in the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: God’s infinite love and His mercy. That is why devotion to Jesus’ sacred heart is also devotion to the Divine Mercy of God. (The image of the Divine Mercy shows blood and water flowing from Jesus’ Sacred Heart). Contemplating Jesus’ love will naturally lead us to contemplate His sorrow, climactically in His pierced wound on the cross. Just as in the devotion to the Sacred Heart, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary also leads us to contemplate her sorrow and her sufferings. When the spear pierced Jesus’ heart on the cross, a sword pierced Mary’s heart at the foot of the cross. By this twin piercing, the twin hearts were made one.
