Living for others

What does it look like to be humble? To be humble is not putting yourself down, or to hide when someone recognizes your contributions. Instead, it is a call to focus on other people. Courtesy is what it looks like to be humble. Pope Francis says that courtesy “is a school of sensitivity and disinterestedness” To be courteous is to live for others. A courteous person has “learned how to listen, to speak, and at certain times, keep quiet.” When we are called to listen, we listen, but when we are called to serve in a place of honour, we don’t need to be afraid! Courtesy opens a person to others and to God, making them available to be instruments of His Mercy.
