What is true freedom?
It is conceptually false to regard “freedom” as the right to say or do anything that one desires. If so, the world will be in chaos as each man who lives according to his own “freedom”, will undoubtedly tramples on other people’s freedom, thus making everyone not free. As Christians, we know that human freedom is a gift from God. Out of His love, God created man as a rational being with reason and free will so that he can initiate and control his own actions. With freedom, man is responsible for his acts and therefore true freedom is not to do anything as one wishes but the ability to choose between good and evil. “The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes” (CCC 1733). On the contrary, the more evil one chooses, the more enslavement one will get. Every evil act leads to “the slavery of sin” (Rom 6:17), a consequence of abusing freedom.
